“Well it’s officially a wrap! We have moved out 98 old mattresses from the Alberta 4-H Centre and hauled in 98 brand new, thicker, comfier and prettier mattresses!” – Kyley Denschikoff, Leader of the 4-H Lakedell Beef Club.
On Tuesday, June 18 ,2019 ninety-eight (98) mattresses were delivered to the Alberta 4-H Centre.
For the past 23 years, the Lakedell 4-H Beef club auctions off a charity calf and donates the proceeds to different charities. This year the members decided to have the proceeds benefit closer to home and they chose to raise money for new mattresses for the Alberta 4-H Centre.
With the generosity of Jodi Hampton of Hampton Simmentals who donated the club calf and feed, The club calf buyers G&T Custom Farming LTD., Harris Construction, Bonnie Glen Landscaping, Crossroads Ag Products, and Vold, Jones & Vold Auction Co Ltd. the club managed to raise $15,894 on the day of the event. And in the spirit of 4-H giving back to 4-H, the 4-H Foundation, and Council Board of Directors and Mattress Mattress also donated money, bringing the total amount raised to approximately $21,000.
It was great to see ‘4-H giving back to 4-H’ and “but the greatest part of the evening was the memories shared as us parents talked about how we slept on these mattresses at camp, many of us met at this camp, and made our life-long friends here. It was great when one kid remarked how maybe when they have kids in 4-H they too will get to help buy new mattresses and maybe we can all come back as grandparents to help again. It was a great evening shared with our amazing 4-H family” – Kyley Denschikoff, Leader of the 4-H Lakedell Beef Club.
The old mattresses did not go to waste either, they were donated to to Camp Maskeptoon on Pigeon Lake and Moose lake.
